A Syrian coffee house inspired by the courtyard houses of Damascus
"Damascena celebrates the culture and cuisine of the Middle East; where food is so much more than just fuel - it’s a cornerstone of society."
With a design inspired by the traditional courtyard houses of Syria, Damascena celebrates the culture and cuisine of the Middle East; where food is so much more than just fuel—it’s a cornerstone of society. Sharing food is a sign of love and friendship, as well as a popular way to do business.
The interior is built around a focal point; in a Syrian courtyard, this would typically be a fountain, whereas here we have created a central cluster of upholstered bench seating sat onto a bespoke pattern floor. Handmade brass pendant lights are interspersed with hanging planting to create a real sense of inside-out space.
With glazing on both sides of the space, the interior is light and bright. All of the furniture and joinery is handmade and bespoke to this project, adding further to the sense of story and atmosphere.
